Tetraplegia (also known as Quadriplegia)

£396,140-£493,000 Compensation towards the bottom of this bracket will be awarded to those who are fully aware of their disability. They are generally not in any pain and their speech, sight and hearing has remained unaffected. They may require some care to help with daily living. However, in some cases  the injured person has been left in physical pain and their senses and ability to communicate have been affected. In which case compensation towards the top of this bracket will be awarded. Such cases will often involve brain damage where a degree of insight is a relevant factor.

Paraplegia

£267,340-£346,890 The level of compensation awarded will depend upon the amount of pain in which the injured person has been left in, how much independence they have lost, whether this has caused depression and affect life expectancy.

Shorter durations

£60,210  Cases resulting in death, unrelated and within a short period of time after the accident will be awarded a lower sum.

  • Internal injuries

Summary:

  • Minor Injuries – up to £36,300
  • Severe Injuries – up to £169,950

  • Asbestos illness

Asbestosis and Pleural Thickening:

This is a lung disease in which scarring thickens the thin membrane covering the lungs. When 1 – 10% £39,660 to £43,320.) of damage has been caused as a result of asbestosis this can affect lung function causing difficulty in breathing, however the condition is generally not expected to get any worse. In cases where injuries have been caused due to a higher percentage of asbestosis, in excess of 10% £43,320 to £129,170this can greatly affect the injured persons quality of live affecting movement, causing severe breathlessness and in more severe cases reduce life expectancy.

Lung Cancer:

(£85,460-£118,790) Has a substantial impact on everyday life in which symptoms, such as shortness of breath, persistent chest pain, tiredness, a hoarse voice and swelling of the face and neck will persist over a number of years.  In the majority of cases this will also result in death.

Mesothelioma:

Causes severe pain and symptoms which last over a number of years with significant impact on daily life. The level of compensation (£77,680-£139,680) varies greatly, depending upon the duration of suffering, the amount of invasive medical procedures, the extent to which this has spread to other organs and circumstances such as the sufferers age, their health before the disease and whether their partner or children will be affected financially after death.

  • Back injuries

Summary:

  • Minor Injuries – £2,990-£15,260
  • Moderate Injuries – £15,260-£47,320
  • Severe Injuries – £47,320-£196,450

Some back injuries can lead to paralysis (in which case see “paralysis” for details).

  • Minor injuries 
  • £2,990-£15,260 include sprains and soft tissue injuries where a full recovery is made without surgery.

Moderate injuries (£15,260-£47,320) are generally those that cause pain and loss of function without prospect of recovery within five years.

Severe injuries (£47,320-£196,450£32,000 – £134,000) are more life changing and permanent.

  • Hip injuries (PNF):  From soft tissue damage to fractured pelvis and severe damage leading to leg amputation £4,820-£159,770
  • Injuries to legs and knees (PNF): From soft tissue damage and knee injuries to amputations £47,320-£196,450
  • Ankles feet and toe injuries (PNF): Including damage to ligaments and tendons, transmalleolar fracture and amputation £16,770-£245.900
